Getting Started
How soon can I get a counselling appointment?
Wait times vary depending on your availability:
- For flexible schedules: typically within 1-2 weeks
- After-hours appointments: high demand with waitlist
Please call (02) 8968 9323 to check current availability or join my waitlist. You can also book online.
What happens in the first session?
In your first session, I will:
- Work to understand your current situation and goals
- Conduct a comprehensive assessment
- Provide feedback and suggest next steps
You’ll experience my approach and can decide whether to proceed with therapy. Many clients report feeling hopeful and gaining new insights even from this initial session.
Where is your office located?
I offer two convenient options:
- Online counselling: Via Zoom from anywhere in Australia or internationally
- In-person counselling: At my Ballina office in the Northern Rivers region of NSW
Zoom is confidential, secure, and easy to use, allowing you to attend from the comfort of your own private space.
Sessions & Scheduling
How long are counselling sessions?
For individuals:
- Initial session: 60 minutes
- Ongoing sessions: 50 minutes
For couples:
- Initial session: 90 minutes recommended
- Ongoing sessions: 60 minutes
What is the frequency of sessions?
I use an enrolment system with consistent appointment times:
- Weekly or fortnightly sessions at the same day and time
- Weekly sessions for crisis situations or accelerated progress
- Alternative scheduling available for clients with special circumstances
We’ll discuss the best schedule for your needs during our first session.
What are your office hours?
Online clients: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 8:00AM to 6:30PM (last appointment at 5:30PM)
In-person clients: Wednesdays at my Ballina office
After-hours appointments are in high demand and often have a waitlist.
Fees & Payment
What are your counselling fees?
You can view my current fees when you book an appointment online.
My initial free 15-minute inquiry call on Zoom or the phone allows you to ask questions before committing to a session.
Do you offer reduced counselling fees?
As a sole practitioner not funded by any government bodies, I don’t offer reduced fees.
If you’re experiencing financial hardship, I recommend checking your local area for free or low-cost government-funded counselling services.
What payments do you accept?
Sydney Gay Counselling is a cashless practice that accepts:
- All major credit cards (VISA, Mastercard, AMEX)
- Direct debit from your bank account
Your payment details will be collected before the first session, and your account will be debited after each session.
About Therapy
How long do I have to be in therapy?
The length of therapy depends on several factors:
- Type and complexity of the issues you’re addressing
- Your motivation for change
- Your current circumstances
Research suggests 3-4 months for lasting change, though many clients notice improvements after just a few sessions. For optimal results, I find that regular attendance for 6-12 months often yields the most positive outcomes.
Do you offer Medicare or health fund rebates?
I do not offer Medicare or health fund rebates and don’t work with mental health care plans.
